Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan are to portray the New York Times reporters who exposed Harvey Weinstein as a sexual predator in a new movie.

The actresses will play Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor in the Universal Pictures project, “She Said“, based on the New York Times bestseller “She Said: Breaking the Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite a Movement”.

The film, directed by Maria Schrader, is set to begin production this summer (2021), according to Deadline.

Kantor and Twohey encouraged a number of women to come forward with alleged sexual harassment and assault stories, which led to Weinstein’s downfall.

Their article, which served as a launch pad for the #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, led to Weinstein being fired by The Weinstein Company board. Last year (2020) he was found guilty and sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape. He has been incarcerated in Wende Correctional Facility in western New York since March 2020, though he is still appealing his conviction and has denied all wrongdoing.

Weinstein still faces extra charges in Los Angeles. However, his extradition to L.A. to face the charges has been put on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, his lawyer has challenged his extradition to L.A. The attorney argued against his client being sent to Los Angeles for “humanitarian” reasons, explaining the producer was technically blind, had major dental issues, and was suffering from cardiac issues, diabetes, back pain and sleep apnea.

“We’re not trying to avoid what is going to happen in California,” the attorney claimed. “We believe there is not only a defence to these charges, we believe there is a very good defence to these charges [and] we believe there will be an acquittal… Mr. Weinstein isn’t going anywhere.”
